Balcon-vie in Montreal’s balconville

As soon as inhospitable winter temperatures subside Montrealers take to their balconies. From smoking cigarettes in winter coats in March to dreamy summer dinners, people in Montreal live on their balconies.  They are a distinctive feature of the city’s low-rise architecture.

I spent two summers documenting life on Montreal balconies. A selection of these photos was published in The Globe and Mail in 2022.
